Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing consists of the Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz and Slow rhythm.  All of these dances are danced in what is called a ‘close hold’ with a partner.  Ballroom dancing has been danced by those of all ages for many, many years but its popularity has increased recently with the production of a number of new television shows.  It is the new craze and more and more people are taking it up as a form of sport.  Some of the dances are great for dinner dances and as a first dance at a wedding, or just join a class to learn a new skill.

Waltz:  This is a slow dance consisting of swings, rotations and a gradual rise and fall through the feet and legs which are all used to create beautiful lines.  The timing of this dance is 3 / 4.

Tango: The tango is a dance that is made up of a series of low, stalking walks that happen by picking up the feet and placing them with short, sharp movements.  Links, flicks and swivels make up the dance moves, with no rise and fall.

Slow Foxtrot:  The Foxtrot is a swinging dance with flowing movements and lines.  There are 4 beats to the bar in this dance’s timing.

Quickstep:  The timing for this dance is also 4 beats in the bar, making it a fun and lively dance.  Chasse’s, turns, lock steps, runs, hops and skips are the moves that make up the Quickstep dance.
